The lowdown on ripening, storage, and handy hacks to get the most out of your green gold.

When your box arrives, your avocados will be green. We pick all our boxes to order, so they'll need some time to ripen up. Let them hang out in the cosy box they arrived in; we've ensured they're comfortable. Then, transfer some to your fruit bowl and the rest into the fridge.

Maintain a steady rotation, taking a few out of the fridge 3-4 days before you plan to use them. This way, you'll have a never-ending supply of beautifully ripe avocados, ensuring you're never without this green goodness.

Storage

Just like people, every avocado is unique and ripens at its own pace. When you first bring them home, keep them in the box until you start to see which ones are ready for the coveted spot in your fruit bowl. Look for the avocados with the darkest colour; they'll be the ones you can enjoy first.

If you find yourself with more avocados than you can handle, don't worry. Pop the extras in the fridge, and let the bright green ones continue hanging out in the box for a few more days. It's best to avoid refrigerating bright green avocados until they've matured a bit; this way, they'll develop a deeper, creamier flavour.

Once in the fridge, avocados will stay fresh for quite a while. Keep an eye on them and select the darkest ones to promote to your fruit bowl.

Now, here's a special privilege – you get to be the first to give your avocados a gentle squeeze test. Press them with your fingers to find the softest one in your fruit bowl. Slice that beauty open and savour the creamy goodness."

Ripening

There are A LOT of avo hacks out there…. and trust us, we’ve tried them all, but only a few have really pulled through. Here’s what we’ve learnt:

  1. Once your avocados have darkened in colour, it's a big thumbs-up to store them in the fridge. This nifty trick can extend their freshness and prevent all your avocados from ripening simultaneously.

  2. When only using half an avocado, remember to store the other half with the pit in the fridge, sealed in an airtight container. This simple step can help prevent oxidation, keeping the fruit green and fresh for longer. A drizzle of lemon juice over the exposed surface also helps to keep it from turning brown.

  3. Now, what if you find yourself with a surplus of avocados on the brink of going bad? Don't worry; we won't judge – it happens to the best of us! You can freeze them. We often make a large batch of guacamole, divide it into portions, and freeze it. Avocados can be frozen diced, sliced, or however you prefer to use them. Freezing is also fantastic if you enjoy adding them to your smoothies or using them in a nourishing hair mask. Yes, you heard that right – they're great for your hair too!

  4. And for all the parents out there, avocados are like a treasure trove for baby food. They're loaded with healthy fats, have a wonderfully soft texture, and are rich in antioxidants and folate, essential for your little one's growth and development. Avocados are a nutrient-packed powerhouse that you'll want to introduce to your little one.

  5. Remember, patience is key when dealing with avocados. We know it can be tempting to slice into that almost ripe avocado, even when waiting just one more day would make it perfect. But trust us, it's worth the wait. Just like any fresh produce, avocados don't offer instant gratification.
